Join us for an intimate evening of flamenco music and dance that highlights a rare all-female flamenco trio, featuring celebrated guitarist and composer Antonia Jiménez, the sultry voice of Barbara Martinez and the captivating moves of Xianix Barrera.
ANTONIA JIMENEZ, born in 1972, is a flamenco guitarist originally from El Puerto de Santa María, Cádiz. From a very young age, Jiménez began studying flamenco guitar with Antonia Villar, accompanying cante and baile in tablaos and peñas in Andalucía. Later, she moved to Madrid where she worked at the most important tablaos and theaters in the capital. She joined the Arrieritos and Nuevo Ballet Español companies and at the same time furthered her studies with maestro Enrique Vargas. She accompanied cante for artists such as Carmen Linares, Montse Cortés, and Juan Pinilla among others; baile for Merche Esperalda, Marco Flores, Olga Pericet, Rocío Molina, Manuel Liñán and Belén Maya, among others, with whom she has traveled the globe.
XIANIX BARRERA, a native New Yorker, began her artistic studies in ballet, modern, jazz, and percussion as a child. Since discovering flamenco, she has trained in New York and Spain under the guidance of distinguished masters including Concha Vargas, Carmen Ledesma, Andres Peña, Raquel Heredia, and La Lupi among others. Xianix has worked, collaborated and shared the stage with artists such as Isabel Bayón, Raquel Heredia "La Repompilla", Rosario Toledo, Soledad Barrio, and Juan Ogalla in prominent venues including the Joyce Theater, Lincoln Center, Tablao El Duende in Copenhagen, the Red Theater in Abu Dhabi, and Cafe Silverio in Sevilla. In 2012, she founded Xianix Barrera Flamenco Company, which produces flamenco performances and workshops that highlight bold and tenacious female artists and their unapologetically robust femininity. Queer themes, female empowerment, sexual identity and social justice color her choreographic work. Her most recent production, Mujeres (Women), featured a rare all-female flamenco cast, featuring revered guitarist and composer Antonia Jiménez. Xianix was one of eight choreographers chosen for the Emerging Choreographer Series at LaGuardia Performing Arts Center produced by Mare Nostrum Elements of which she has been nominated for a prestigious Bessie Award for Outstanding Performer. She was an Artist in Residence with Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana, a SU-CASA community arts engagement grantee and a scholarship recipient for the Flamenco Program at the School of Jacobs Pillow. In addition to being an accomplished performer, Xianix is a highly sought-after teacher giving master flamenco workshops for the Joyce Theater and New York City Center during its annual Flamenco Festival.
BARBARA MARTINEZ grew up performing in New York City. Originally from Venezuela, she follows a lineage of celebrated Argentinian tango singer/actresses Morenita Rey and Libertad Lamarque. Growing up, visual arts surrounded her, as her father Rafael Martínez is a renowned Venezuelan sculptor. For almost 20 years, Bárbara has worked as a dancer and singer with numerous flamenco dance companies, also dancing in Carmen and La Traviata at the Metropolitan Opera, where she sang as a child. Her experience with experimental theater began with the off-broadway company Mabou Mines at age 12 and continued into work as an actor, dancer and choreographer in multimedia musical plays written and directed by her mother, Amelia Arenas. In 2010, Bárbara performed at Carnegie Hall/Weill in solo concert to a sold out house with a her flamenco group. This solo project has grown to include South American, Middle Eastern and Sephardic music with jazz musicians, maintaining the essence of flamenco at its core. She appears in the documentary Sobre Las Olas A Story of Flamenco in the U.S. by Carolina Loyola-Garcia and the photography exhibit 100 Years of Flamenco in New York produced by NY Performing Arts Library and Carlota Santana Flamenco Vivo.
